Between 18th June and 24th June, 2nd Middlesex of 23 Brigade, 8th Division were in support in Ypres. Throughout this period there was continuous and heavy shelling by both sides in the salient and as always Ypres itself was a prime target for the German guns, further reducing it to the pile of rubble it became. On 25th June 2nd Middlesex relieved 2nd West Yorkshire in left sub sector of front held by 8th Division which ran between the Ypres-Roulers railway and Zouave Wood. 23 Brigade were on the left of this line from the railway to the Bellewaardebeke. The shelling continued unabated and there were the inevitable casualties for the battalion. One of these was Reginald Tillcock who was killed on 28th June. |
